Hope you're all well? I am... I'm really enjoying my life as a Yoga Teacher;  I'm really happy to have some awesome people now coming along to my Albany Creek classes & have been covering quite a lot of classes for lovely groups of people too, and not forgetting my fabulous private student too!

I absolutely love being able to share yoga and meditation practices with everyone, each & every class I teach leaves me with a full heart and such an appreciation for being able to be living my passion.

<![CDATA[Karma Yogi? Okay dokey!]]>Sat, 17 Feb 2018 14:59:49 GMThttp://yogaowl.com.au/yoga-owl-news--blog/karma-yogi-okay-dokeyI don't know about you, but I can't believe how fast this year is going already! When I was a teenager and always wishing time away, whether it be for the school holidays, my birthday or Christmas - I remember my mum telling me to wait until I was older as she assured me that time would speed up... I think I'm there now and I don't mind admitting this - Mum you were so right! LOL :-)

In mid-January I went along to the Krishna Village in Eungella, NSW and stayed for a week as a Karma Yogi. Being a Karma Yogi involves volunteering in their beautiful gardens for 5 hours a day x 4 days . One hour into my first shift and I was already feeling pretty challenged... oh dear, what have I signed up for I thought?! 
The self doubt and negativity crept in quickly, as in reality I'm someone who has spent the last 27 years working in offices and not really getting her hands dirty! Moi, a princess?! Maybe maybe!

I'm pleased to say though that after my first shift the self doubt dissipated and turned into an appreciation for the garden & all of the tasks involved; from harvesting tomatoes, zucchini and herbs, watering the new seedlings, carrying and laying mulch around the citrus trees, and planting new herbs. My favourite shift in the garden included my new friends in the Eastside Garden team and I collecting rocks from the local creek to plant in (as support) around some frangipani trees. We were able to have a lovely dip in the creek before heading back to the garden, the water was so clean and refreshingly cool, ahhhh, total bliss!

The rest of my days at the village were filled with Yoga Asana Classes, Meditation, Philosophy Talks, lots of yummy food (with the majority of ingredients sourced from the gardens) and generally feeling lucky to be spending quality time in such a beautiful part of Australia with new friends & beautiful souls.

I also had an awesome day out at the Crystal Castle whilst I was down that way, it really is a stunning place that has such a relaxing and blissful atmosphere... I'll be visiting Krishna Village and The Crystal Castle again in the future that's for sure!

Thanks for taking time out of your day to read this, I hope that you're all happy and making sure to include self-care into your life every day? Remember that it's not selfish to make time for yourselves, quite the opposite in fact... it's a necessity, as none of us can serve from an empty vessel! So please be kind to you!!!

Wow, what an absolute blast 2017 was! I hope that your year had more ups than downs and more happy times than sad...  I thought that I'd write this time around about the stand out moments that 2017 brought to me personally and professionally.

February: I successfully completed my 350 hour Yoga Teacher Training course - I'm so proud of this achievement, due to my perseverance and the unwavering support & motivation from my partner, Steve (2016 was a shocker for us both health wise so it was very humbling and rewarding to actually get to this point). 

March: The launch of Yoga Owl as a business! When I was thinking of business names, I came up with so many but none 'felt right'. Until one evening Steve said, 'you love Yoga and you love Owls, yes? Why not call yourself Yoga Owl???' OMG, of course!!! I love the simplicity of the name and it's origin, it's so easy to overthink things sometimes, when the answer can be staring you right in the face, you just need to take a step back to see it.

April: Taught some cover classes and fell in love with sharing the beautiful practice of yoga more and more with each class.

June & July: Holiday time! Fortunate enough to take a couple of awesome mid-week breaks for some lovely rest and relaxation.

July-August: Started to teach a six week/two classes a week Corporate Yoga Asana Program to my first client company (with up to 20 students in some of the classes). Witnessing the positive shift in students energy and mood during classes is such a beautiful sight to behold and (forgive me for being soppy) to be honest, just makes my heart burst with happiness!!!

August & September: Facilitated a six week Relaxation & Meditation Program at the first client company -
I'd just like to say right here... any company that is proactive in bringing these classes (& yoga asanas) to their employees deserve a huge amount of respect and kudos! Every company should do it!

I also taught a mixture of Yoga Asana and Relaxation & Meditation classes to a second client company and again, it was awesome to see the positive shift in energy and mood.

October & November: The feedback was so positive following the first program (at the first client company) that they requested I teach a second six week/two classes a week Yoga Asana Program - HAPPY DANCE!!! 

Steve and I also went on another beautiful holiday, this time up north (Australia is so pretty!)

December: A very surprising and unexpected twist to the end of my 2017...
I was made redundant from my full time job that had been a part of my life for the past 7 years and 8 months! 

Thanks for reading my story - I'm so excited about what doors will open for me and my loved ones in 2018, but I'm sure it will come as no surprise to any of you... there will be LOTS of Yoga, as well as love, fun and travel adventures for this Yoga Owl!

Last weekend I spent a couple of days at a Kirtan and Yoga Retreat in Tyalgum Ridge Retreat, Mount Warning, NSW organised by the Australian School of Meditation and Yoga. It was a lovely weekend filled with kirtan meditation, philosophy talks, guided meditations, yummy food, beautiful souls and yoga asana classes with beautiful Mount Warning as a back drop! Pretty awesome way to spend a weekend! 

Then on Wednesday, Steve and I drove up to Agnes Water and 1770 for a lovely mid-week break, it took six hours to drive up there, but sharing the driving and having some good chats on the way, we soon got there. We had a great day exploring on Thursday, checking out a couple of beaches, Deepwater National Park and the beautiful Paperbark Forest Boardwalk - it really is such a pretty area. Steve was able to get a couple of drone flights in and also took some fabulous yoga photos for me, which I'll upload to the website soon.

On Friday we listened to what our bodies needed and had a lovely relaxing day around the hotel and pool. It's always good to have a mix of exploring and relaxing I find, I've never been a big fan of coming home from a holiday more tired than I started out! Three nights away seems to be the magic number too, it's long enough that you can fully relax and recharge, but also short enough that we can manage to have quite a few awesome relaxing breaks throughout the year.

Back home yesterday and we got a lovely welcome off our little furbaby Sissi, she's 14 years young and has us both wrapped around her little cat claws, lol. Huge thanks to our lovely neighbour Sue for looking after Sissi xox

This morning, the nourishment of my mind, body and soul continued, with a very soothing three hour Body Bliss Mini Retreat, led by the wonderful Laurina Kersten. I have never known three hours to go by so quickly! I left the workshop feeling so relaxed and chilled out with no aches and pains! I would thoroughly recommend checking out these lovely Body Bliss Mini Retreats if you ever get the chance to, you won't regret it! 

Life is all about spending time with people who make your heart sing, as well as finding out what makes your soul happy and doing more of that... I hope that you're able to get your soul happy dancing this week!  If you need some inspiration, here are 40 ways that may help you to start putting yourself as a priority in just five minutes or less - 40 Ways to Relax in five minutes or less

I first started practicing yoga asanas (poses) and meditation about six years ago (although my practice was quite irregular for the first couple of years!) I love how doing the asanas and pranayama (breath techniques) make me feel, both physically and mentally.

In 2013 I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis - I remember my rheumatologist telling me to imagine having superglue down the length of my spine and the best thing I can do to keep it from ‘locking tight’ is to keep the spine as flexible as possible, that was when I started to become more serious about it all.

I commenced my 350 hour Hatha Yoga Teacher Training course in February 2016 with Veda Yoga Teacher Training as I was interested in learning more about this beautiful practice of yoga. I figured that if it could help me stay mobile as I grow older, then it was absolutely necessary for me to do for my own preservation and so then, my true journey of yoga began...

However, two months into the course I broke my ankle in two places! I was in a cast and wheelchair for six weeks, then a moonboot and crutches for a further nine weeks, so it certainly wasn't the ideal start to my training! I used the time that I was immobile to delve deeper into the theory side of the course work, as I obviously couldn’t do any of the practical work, apart from Legs up the Wall pose and Supported Shoulderstand (I still love those poses to this day!) When I was using the moonboot I was able to put more weight on the ankle gradually and started to pick up my practical work again to try to catch up on my yoga studies.

Then 2016 decided to throw an even bigger curve ball at my partner, Steve and I…

In June, Steve hadn’t been feeling well and had numerous trips to the doctors to check blood pressure etc. and was thinking that he perhaps had a virus. On 19 June he asked me to take him to the hospital as he was really struggling with persistent indigestion and fatigue. When the doctors checked him out they discovered that he’d had a heart attack (nine days prior!) and unfortunately a third of his heart had already perished through lack of oxygen.

So, please know that the symptoms of a heart attack don’t always present themselves as they do in the movies! If something doesn’t feel right, go to the hospital and have them check you over,better safe than sorry.

Steve had a double bypass and heart reconstruction on 29 June all at the young age of 42! Thankfully the surgery was successful and 19 days after going into hospital I was allowed to bring him home. During that time, which consisted of work, hospital visits, worry, sleep and repeat! I fell further and further behind with my yoga work and seriously thought about quitting the course, or at least deferring - but Steve kept me going as he could see how much I enjoyed it.

Once Steve was home I was able to plough into my yoga studies once again, where slowly but surely I managed to catch up with the work. I qualified as a Registered Level 1 Yoga Teacher on 28 February this year and could not be happier! I feel very proud that I didn’t give up and my love for yoga increases on a daily basis.

I launched Yoga Owl once I qualified, knowing that I wanted to pass on the knowledge that I’d learnt (and am still learning) to others. Yoga is accessible to everybody, whether it’s by practicing asanas (as a form of exercise) or on a deeper level (there are actually Eight Limbs of Yoga, with asanas being just one of them).

Fast forward to September 2017 where I am now teaching some corporate Yoga Asana classes and Relaxation and Meditation. I always feel so joyful after a class when I see the difference in people’s demeanour, they seem to have less worries and a lightness about their whole being.

I know that for me, Yoga is now an integral part of my life, I would love to reach a grand old age, complete with a great quality of life and although we can’t be too sure what ‘life’ will throw our way, I know for sure that Yoga helps me every day and my body, mind and soul certainly thanks me for it!

It's hard to believe that we're in September already isn't it?! The years seem to fly past quicker with each passing year, it certainly seems to be the case for me anyway! 14 weeks until Christmas Day and the mince pies, crackers and plum puddings are in the shops already, what a crazy world we live in...

So what's been happening for this Yoga Owl recently?

Well, life has been very busy, with my full time job and also teaching two corporate Yoga Asana and Relaxation & Meditation programs. But oh, how I'm loving it!!! I absolutely LOVE seeing the students so relaxed and calm at the end of the classes and I always have a huge grin on my face for an hour or so after teaching a class, perfect win-win! 

I'm going on a yoga & kirtan retreat at the end of this month which I know will be so beautiful and relaxing, I'll tell you all about it next time.

Winter has well and truly landed here in Queensland! It was a struggle to get up and moving this morning as the temperature dropped to around 9℃ overnight! Some of you may laugh and think, that's not cold... & given the fact that I lived the first 30 years of my life in northern England, you would think that I'd be used to chilly mornings. I used to be, however, I acclimatised to the QLD weather very quickly when we first came out here in 2004 and I'll admit it, I'm such a big wuss now when it comes to the cold! 

So, motivation was definitely needed this morning!!!

My motivation to get out of bed at 5:15am this morning was the thought of going to teach another corporate yoga class at 7am. I had five equally motivated students come along to do a lovely Gentle Flow class and we soon warmed up ~ what better way to start the day, than by spending time on YOU! 

Here's a photo of my awesome students relaxing in savasana at the end of the class ~ body, mind and spirit relaxed and calm, ready for whatever a Friday in their life brings to them.

Yoga Owl flew into the corporate world this week when I taught my first two yoga asana classes at an awesome company based at Brisbane Airport (as part of their Health & Wellbeing Program).

I'm signed up to teach a six week asana program, followed by six weeks of beautiful relaxation and meditation classes - looking forward to next weeks classes already!

Yoga makes me feel so good and has so many wonderful benefits, such as enlivening vitality and energy as well as enhancing your overall sense of wellbeing, these are just a few things that made me fall in love with the practice of yoga in the first place. So, being able to help people enter a calming space in the middle of what can often be a tense or stressful day is such an honour and makes me feel truly humble.
